Test battery voltage to ensure it has a proper charge, typically about 12.6 volts when the car is off. Watch out for slow starts, dim lights, or frequent need for jump starts. These are signs that the battery is low and might soon die.

Inspect battery terminals for corrosion, and clean them safely to ensure proper connection. Check the dashboard for any flickering lights or warning signals to make sure your alternator is charging the battery properly. Also, regularly check all lights and fuses to make sure every electrical component is working as it should.

Filters, Belts & Hoses — Small Parts, Big Impact

To maintain airflow and efficiency, keep air and cabin filters clean and replace them regularly. Better gas mileage, combined with fresh air inside your car, leads to fresh filters. Additionally, check the belts for any signs of cracking or wear, particularly the timing and serpentine belts, as failure can cause major engine damage.

Check hoses for soft spots, bulges, or leaks, and keep clamps tight. Damaged hoses can cause overheating or fluid loss. Hence, preventive maintenance can be a better option for older cars than waiting for parts to fail and can be less expensive than emergency repairs.
